We have partnered with Skip Tyler to work with our middle school math team and it has been one of the most impactful professional development opportunities we have ever had. In March 2025, Skip began working with middle school math teachers and school administrators. The goal was to “change the story” by shifting from traditional teaching to implementing reasoning routines, strategies, and teaching students how to facilitate their own learning.

Skip has been a great partner for us, he goes into classrooms and works with teachers and students alike. I have witnessed him model math lessons and tasks as well as lead professional development sessions not only for math teachers but also for the entire middle school faculty. Additionally, we conducted a book study (“Math Workshop Grades 6-12”) with the middle school and high school teachers to collaborate and share ideas. Skip was present and led one of the after school sessions.

Skip took time to get to know our teachers as individuals and helped each teacher with data analysis. He prioritized our needs and tailored all professional development to improve our teaching and learning. Most importantly, he provided immediate feedback to the teachers and debriefed after observations. His presence with our teachers and students has been a “game changer” for transforming the mathematical instruction and mathematical tasks – all contributing to student success and achievement. We will continue to work with Skip in the days ahead.
